What is Botball?

Botball is an educational program for middle and high school aged students that develops students’ natural instincts for design and engineering. In Botball, students work as a team to design, build, program, document, and demonstrate a pair of original mobile robots to solve open-ended challenges in a high-energy tournament setting. Read our About Botball page to learn more.

Why is Botball Different from other Programs?

Computer Programming

The robots are always autonomous - no remote control is used. Instead, students learn to program their robots in advance using C, the most widely used programming language in industry and academia. Botball gives students the tools to develop sophisticated strategies using artificial intelligence with embedded systems.

Long Term Impact on the Classroom

Teachers who know how to use robotics to teach STEM and have appropriate educational materials can impact students for years. That’s why every Botball region hosts a hands-on professional development workshop for educators, and why Botball robotics equipment is reusable and remains with the teams after the tournaments.

KISS Institute for Practical Robotics

Botball is a program of KISS Institute for Practical Robotics, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization dedicated to using the excitement of robotics to stimulate and engage students in exploring their potential in engineering, science and math. We created Botball in 1997 as a fun team activity that gets students programming and also directly incorporates the project management experience of professional engineering projects. Our mission is to:

  • improve the public’s understanding of science, technology, engineering, and math;
  • develop the skills, character, and aspirations of students;
  • contribute to the enrichment of our school systems, communities, and the Nation.
