2006 National Conference on Educational Robotics Call For Papers


Goal

The goal of the conference sessions is to provide an opportunity to share ideas on the topics listed below. We encourage original thinking on topics as detailed as technical innovations and as broad as ethics and robotics.

Accepted papers will be presented as talks at conference sessions or as posters for the Showcase. Determinations will be made by the review committee.

NEW THIS YEAR!

KISS Institute is pleased to announce that we will be presenting awards at the 2006 National Conference for outstanding papers in middle school, high school and teacher divisions. All papers submitted will be entered into one of two categories depending on your division. Cash awards for the top papers in each category for each division will be presented at the National Conference. For more information please read the Review Criteria section that follows.

Review Criteria

Papers will be reviewed for clarity and relevance to educational robotics.

Middle and High School Division:

Categories for middle and high school papers are as follows:

Robotics in Science and Math

A $100 cash award will be given for the best paper on “Robotics in Science and/or Math” in each division (middle school and high school). Topics for papers in this category might include:

  • How I used math in Botball
  • How I used science in Botball
  • Science and/or math experiments with the Botball kit
  • Applications of science and/or math to robotics

Best Overall Paper - Other

A $100 cash award will be given for the best overall paper on a topic not included in the “Robotics in Science and Math” category in each division (middle school and high school). Topics for papers in this category might include:

  • Innovations with the Botball kit
  • Applications of technology and engineering to robotics
  • Technical papers (might include color tracking technology, programming topics, XBC technology, etc.)
  • Best practices in Botball
  • Project management/team development
  • General topics, such as assistive robotics and household robotics
  • Ethics and robotics
  • Summer robotics programs
  • Robotics clubs

Educator/Mentor Division:

This division will include papers submitted by teachers, team leaders and mentors and will include the following categories:

Curriculum and/or Lesson Planning

A $100 cash award will be given for the best overall paper on "Curriculum and/or Lesson Planning for Robotics Education". Topics for papers in this category might include:

  • Curriculum, lesson plans and/or activities that utilize kit parts or concepts relevant to Botball.
  • Robotics courses (design, curriculum and/or national/state standards)

Best Overall Paper - Other

A $100 cash award will be given for the best overall paper on a topic not included in the “Curriculum and/or Lesson Planning for Robotics Education” category. Topics for papers in this category might include:

  • Non-Botball uses for a Botball Kit
  • Best practices in Botball (organization of team, organization of equipment, planning, funding, involving administration and parents, team leadership, team meetings, etc.)
  • Project management/team development
  • Attracting more girls and underrepresented populations to engineering and technology
  • Overcoming challenging elements in team management
  • Techniques for ensuring participation from all team members
  • Robotics clubs
  • Botball partnerships with Universities
  • Summer robotics programs

Guidelines For Submission

Deadline for papers:EXTENDED!! Noon on June 5, 2006

Notification of accepted papers: June 12, 2006

  • Review the "example paper" at our website for important information about paper submission
  • Submit your paper via email attachment to: conference@kipr.org
  • Use subject line: Paper Submission
  • **No paper submissions will be accepted via fax**
  • Notification of receipt will be emailed to the first (or designated) author soon after receipt
  • No changes to approved papers will be accepted after June 16, 2006

All papers become property of KISS Institute, although authorship will always be acknowledged. Proceedings will be published as a CD, which will be available at the conference. For individuals 18 years of age and older, include each author’s name, school, address, phone and email address to be published with the paper. For individuals under 18 please include only the author’s name and school name.

Format

All papers must meet the following formatting criteria

  • 10 or fewer pages
  • Submit in .pdf format (.doc [MS Word] and .rtf formats will only be accepted if submitter has received approval from KISS Institute in advance)
  • Times New Roman font
  • 12 point type
  • 1" margins
  • Please do not number pages
  • Photographs and diagrams are encouraged and should be embedded in the text
  • Author information must appear in the top left corner of the paper and include the title of the paper (in bold); the names, school, postal and email addresses, and telephone numbers of all authors 18 years of age or older. Authors under 18 should only include the title of the paper (in bold), their name and school name.
  • The title should appear below the author information, in bold, centered
  • Proper citation of sources required
  • Quicktime or MPEG videos, not to exceed 10 megabytes, may be submitted as supporting material for the paper
