The Botball® season starts in January-February with a two-day professional development workshop followed by a competitive tournament 7-9 weeks later.
Teams can also participate in the International Botball® Tournament that is held every summer during the Global Conference on Education Robotics.

Any student in the 6th through 12th grades can participate in Botball®. There is no restriction on team size. 12 students per a team is the average, however some teams have as many as 40 students while others have as few as 2 students. For primary/elementary school teams, check out the Junior Botball® Challenge.

Here are a few requirements that you will need to form a team and create a robot for the Botball® season:

  • Computer - Botball® participants will need access to a laptop computer or device with WIFI capability and/or USB ports. There will be no computers available at the workshop or tournament, so a team needs to have access to one at all times.

  • The computer or device requirements are:


    • Wifi and a USB port and drivers for connecting to the robot controller via USB.
    • Privileges to install new software on the computer
    • Internet Access -- The bulk of correspondence regarding Botball® is done via e-mail or posted on our web site. E-mail is vital to success in the Botball® program.
    • Game Board -- Each team has the option to build their own game board for practice purposes. The cost to build a game board is kept to a minimum and detailed instructions are provided at the workshop. All parts are standard items available at most home improvement stores.

No, there are many home-school, community, and parent-led teams. Teams are required to have at least one designated adult leader.

The time between the professional development workshop and the tournament is approximately 8 weeks. Teams meet at least 2 times per week for several hours and many teams meet as often as possible during the build period.

Yes, and often the middle school teams win! Every game is structured with multiple scoring objectives, allowing teams to focus on harder goals or simpler solutions.

The kit always contains enough material to build 2 autonomous robots:

  • 2 Robot controllers
  • 1 Digital cameras
  • 1 iRobot Create®
  • Approximately 20 sensors
  • KISS Institute for Practical Robotics Metal Pieces
  • Approximately 1000 LEGO® pieces
  • Motors
  • Servos
  • Screws and nuts
  • All required game components
The only required tools are a wrench and screwdriver, which are also provided in the kit.

Teams can reuse select kit components to participate at a reduced registration fee. 88% of Botball® teachers report reusing the Botball® equipment for other classroom activities.

Yes, we start off our season with a two-day professional development workshop where participants learn the basics. Before leaving you will build two working robots, explore Botball® manuals, engage in exciting activities, and review online curriculum

You simply need the desire to work with students and facilitate their learning. You do not have to be an engineer or computer programmer.

Botball® focuses on education and student development. Student teams utilize and compete with two autonomous (no remote control) robots that they designed, built, and programmed. Adults are encouraged to mentor, but are not allowed to work on or program the robots.

Payment Deadline

All payments must be received in full one week prior to the workshop.

Withdrawal Policy

If you notify KISS Institute that you wish to withdraw from the program at least two weeks in advance of the workshop, your team is relieved of all financial obligation. Teams who have already paid will be refunded in full.

If you notify KISS Institute that you wish to withdraw from the program within the two weeks prior to the workshop or after the workshop date, your team will be subject to a late withdrawal fee of 10% of the registration fee to cover the cost of shipping and restocking your team's equipment.

If you notify KISS Institute that you wish to withdraw from the program after attending the workshop, your team is responsible for the entire registration fee.

Photographs

Photos will be taken during the workshop, tournament, and Global Conference on Educational Robotics. KISS Institute for Practical Robotics reserves the right to use any photograph taken during a Botball® event, without the express written permission of those included within the photograph. Photographs may be used in publications or other media material produced, used, or contracted by KISS Institute. Any person desiring not to have their photo taken or distributed must contact KISS Institute's Public Outreach Coordinator in writing stating their preference and include a photograph. The photo will be used for identification purposes and will be held in confidentiality by the Public Outreach Coordinator.

Important Reuse Equipment Policy

Returning teams can choose to reuse previous equipment in exchange for a discounted registration cost. To see the equipment to reuse and reduction in costs, refer to the registration form.

Parts Replacement:

Teams have the opportunity to replace broken or damaged kit parts during the Teacher Workshop at no charge. After kits are checked out from the workshop, teams may purchase electronic parts from the Botball® Store.

Kit Shipment:

Should a returning team elect not to attend the workshop, KISS Institute will ship the kit to your school after the workshop. Full registration payment and shipping fees must be received prior to shipment.

KISS Institute for Practical Robotics is NOT a LEGO® retailer and cannot sell or replace individual LEGO® parts.
